One of my favorite things to do after buying an art print is choosing a frame. The right frame can make a huge impact on how an art piece looks, and I think the frame selection is just as important as the artwork. A well-chosen high quality art frame not only protects your art but also compliments and enhances it. Over time I’ve found a few places that offer a really good selection of frames, and I’m looking forward to sharing them with you!

My criteria for choosing frames

When choosing a frame there’s a few things I look out for. I look at the frame thickness. An extremely thick frame has a tendency to overpower the artwork, while a thinner frame highlights the art without competing. When it comes to material wooden frames give a warm, classic look, while metal and black frames provide a sleek and modern vibe. In terms of price, I prefer prefer a high quality affordable frame.

My favorite frame styles

Floating frames: Floating frames are great for art prints that aren’t a standard frame size or have features you want to show off like torn edges. I imagine floating frames would also look nice against colored or wall papered walls.

Matted frames: Matted frames can add a lot of drama and elegance to an art print. They take up space, and create a focal point for the picture.

Unique decorative frames: I like to pair some artwork with a unique quirky frame. For example a frame with wavy edges, a checkerboard frame, or a frame that’s shaped in an arch instead of the typical square or rectangle.

Target

Why I love it: I love the drama of the Target frames. The Threshold series are a staple in my home, and I enjoy how the high quality frames enhance any artwork or picture.

Pros: Variety of frame and mat sizes. Frames come in a variety of materials

Cons: Limited color options, higher price point.

IKEA

Why I love it: Ikea has a variety of minimalist style frames in several sizes. They are often affordable, and instead of glass, they often use a thick glass like plastic in the frame.

Marshalls

Why I love it: My local Marshalls, has a nice selection of modern trendy table top frames. I love being surprised by the selection they have whenever I stop by the store. Marshalls is a great place to check out if you’re looking for cute and affordable 5x7 inch frames to place on your dresser, nightstand, or other decorative surfaces.

Pros: Affordable and trendy table top frames

Cons: Wall frames aren’t as readily available or easy to find (at least at my local Marshalls)

Tips for buying frames

When shopping for frames, be sure to consider the style of your art. A contemporary print might look best in a sleek modern frame, while a vintage inspired piece could look best in a deep brown wooden or bronze frame. If you’re buying online, be sure to read the reviews and check the return policy in case the frame doesn’t meet your expectations or the frame glass arrives broken.

If possible, be sure to shop in person. Buying frames in store allows you to feel and see the quality and frame size before purchasing. Be sure to keep an eye out for sales.
